If translated directly from Chinese, “Nüshu” means “women’s script.” In ancient Jiangyong County, people firmly believed that women’s lack of talent was virtuous, and they thought women should not learn to write. During this time, women resisted in their own soft and unique way by inventing a script that only women could learn—Nüshu, the women’s script.
In that distant era, women not only had to endure the physical torment of foot-binding but also bore the mental pressure of being expected to bear sons. Their names were not allowed to enter ancestral halls, and they spent their lives confined in deep, private chambers. They used Nüshu to write their innermost feelings and communicate with each other. It is a language written with tears.
